Tesla to Halt Cybertruck Production for Cybercab Launch

Tesla to Cease Cybertruck Production in Texas
On Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company plans to wind down production of the Cybertruck at its Texas gigafactory around mid-2024. This transition aims to allocate resources for the upcoming Cybercab robotaxi, which Musk has emphasized as a pivotal offering for the company’s future.
Production Shift at Texas Gigafactory
The Cybertruck is currently manufactured exclusively at Tesla’s Texas facility, where it shares production lines with the Tesla Model Y and the two-seat Cybercab. While Musk did not clarify whether the Cybertruck would be produced at an alternative site, he responded to a user’s comment on X, reflecting on the end of an era for the vehicle. The user praised the Cybertruck as Tesla’s finest creation.
“True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” Musk stated.
The company commenced deliveries of the Cybertruck in late 2023, but did not provide immediate comments to CNBC regarding the production changes.
Sales Performance and Market Reception
Despite its unique design garnering a dedicated following, the Cybertruck has struggled to achieve widespread market success. Musk initially predicted annual sales would reach 250,000 units. However, Cox Automotive reported that Cybertruck sales in the U.S. fell to 20,237 units last year, a significant drop of 48% from 38,965 in 2024.
SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace and technology firm, emerged as a major purchaser of the Cybertruck, investing $131 million in the vehicles at Tesla’s retail price, as detailed in a SpaceX financial report.
Controversies and Quality Issues
The Cybertruck’s striking appearance has made some owners targets of negative reactions, including road rage incidents. An owner recounted experiences of being verbally assaulted due to their vehicle choice, particularly after Musk’s involvement in political funding and government efficiency initiatives.
Wired magazine noted in an October 2025 feature that the Cybertruck has become a symbol of political sentiments, with owners reporting hostile encounters.
Additionally, the Cybertruck has faced scrutiny over its specifications, which have not always met early claims and have sometimes lagged behind traditional gasoline-powered pickups. Quality control issues have also plagued the vehicle, leading to 11 voluntary recalls for the 2024 model, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These recalls addressed various concerns, including a risk of unintended acceleration, software glitches, and inverter faults that could lead to sudden power loss.
