Violent Crime Rates Drop Significantly in 2025

According to the latest preliminary data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) indicates a remarkable reduction in violent crime rates for the year 2025.

“This report is proof that President Trump’s ‘Make America Safe Again’ agenda is working,” stated Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward. “Under President Trump and Attorney General Blanche, the safety of law-abiding Americans will always come first. This success reinforces our commitment to ensuring every American can live, work, and raise a family without fear.”

Key Findings from the Survey

  • The rate of non-fatal violent crime, excluding simple assault, fell by 25%, from 9.9 incidents per 1,000 individuals aged 12 and older in 2024 to 7.4 per 1,000 in 2025.
  • Serious violent victimization, which includes rape, sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault, saw significant declines, with aggravated assault rates decreasing by 31% from 4.5 per 1,000 to 3.1 per 1,000.
  • Property victimization dropped by 19%, from 138.0 incidents per 1,000 households in 2024 to 111.2 per 1,000 in 2025.
  • Burglary or trespassing rates decreased by 25%, while motor vehicle theft fell by 30%, and other household thefts saw a 19% decline.

The NCVS serves as the primary source of information on criminal victimization in the United States, encompassing both reported and unreported crimes. Each year, BJS collects data from a representative sample of approximately 240,000 individuals aged 12 and older across 150,000 households, detailing the frequency, characteristics, and impact of non-fatal criminal victimization.

In January 2025, BJS transitioned to the redesigned NCVS-R instrument, and this report presents the first estimates from this updated survey methodology.

These findings follow last week’s release of the BJS report on Homicide Victimization in the United States, which indicated a 17% decrease in homicide rates from 2024 to 2025.
