Djokovic Celebrates Serbia’s Youth Movement After Election Win

Novak Djokovic has expressed his support for Serbia’s student-led movement, which achieved a remarkable electoral victory over long-time leader Aleksandr Vucic. The tennis champion noted that this movement has fostered a “sense of pride” not only in Serbia but also internationally.

The former world number one, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, has had a strained relationship with Vucic in recent years. In search of tranquility and a better environment for his family, Djokovic relocated to Greece late last year.

Vucic conceded defeat on October 25, 2026, in an election that saw him and his right-wing party face off against a diverse opposition movement led by students. This movement had been actively protesting against his administration for two years.

Djokovic’s Remarks on the Political Shift

At a press conference held on October 27 during the Swiss Indoors event in Basel, Djokovic shared his thoughts on the recent political developments:

“I’m very happy about it. My deepest respect to the students and young people who have fought. They have shown dignity and incredible resilience over the last two years, under humongous pressure.”

He continued, expressing admiration for their efforts: “They’ve managed to create this sense of pride in all the people, not just in Serbia but abroad as well.”

Djokovic, a prominent figure from a country that has faced the scars of civil war during his upbringing, has consistently supported student protests, particularly following a tragic incident in which a canopy collapsed at Novi Sad station two years ago, resulting in the loss of 16 lives.

Looking Toward a Prosperous Future

Reflecting on the electoral outcome, Djokovic stated, “The victory is secured and we all now have hopes that our country will be prosperous and that we’ll be enjoying the future that is coming.”

Regarding his move to Greece, the 38-year-old revealed that it was not a long-planned decision, attributing the change to shifts in both his personal and professional life over the past two years. He emphasized that his family’s priority is to ensure their children grow up in “the most beneficial environment,” adding that they feel “welcome” in Greece.
