Team USA Triumphs at Presidents Cup, Snedeker Thanks Trump
Team USA Captures Presidents Cup in Thrilling Comeback
In a stunning display of resilience, Team USA secured a 17-13 victory over the International team at the Presidents Cup, with Captain Brandt Snedeker attributing part of the triumph to President Donald Trump.
“One last shoutout: Donald Trump. President Trump. He told me, ‘I [am] going to bring energy today for you. You guys need it,'” Snedeker remarked.
He added, “I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. So, thank you, President Trump.”
Historic Comeback at Medinah
With Trump present at Medinah Country Club, the U.S. team faced an unprecedented challenge, trailing for the first time on home soil heading into the final singles matches.
As the honorary chairman of the event, Trump addressed the audience from the first tee, humorously acknowledging the media’s portrayal of his reception:
“You know, the fake news media will say I get a very bad reception. But we get a good reception.”
He continued, “[PGA Tour CEO] Brian [Rolapp] said, ‘Could you make a short speech?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t have the courage to make a speech. These people wanna see golf. They don’t wanna hear speeches.’ I’ll only say this: Our country is doing great, better than ever before.”
Turning the Tide
Entering the tournament, Team USA had a perfect home record, winning all eight previous Presidents Cups held on U.S. soil and boasting a ten-match winning streak overall. However, they were still reeling from a loss to Europe at last year’s Ryder Cup.
Facing a 10½-7½ deficit, the Americans rallied by winning nine of the twelve singles matches, outscoring the Internationals 9½-2½. Notably, rookie Jacob Bridgeman secured the decisive point with a par putt on the 18th hole.
Key Performances
- Cameron Young set the pace with a 3&2 victory over Ryo Hisatsune.
- Justin Thomas showcased his match play prowess, winning 5&3 against Corey Conners.
- World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler overcame Nico Echavarria 2&1.
- Rookie Chris Gotterup had an impressive week, finishing 3-1 after defeating Christiaan Bezuidenhout 1 up.
- Collin Morikawa delivered a thrilling 1-up win against Hideki Matsuyama in a match that saw numerous lead changes.
- Patrick Cantlay electrified the crowd with a dramatic 57-foot birdie putt, ultimately defeating Adam Scott 2&1.
Despite some setbacks, the International team fought back, with Tom Kim defeating world No. 5 Wyndham Clark and Sungjae Im overcoming Sam Burns.
Rookies Shine
Among the standout performances was 21-year-old Jackson Koivun, who turned around his match against Si Woo Kim, ultimately winning 1 up. Bridgeman’s crucial par putt on the 18th sealed the deal for Team USA.
As the crowd erupted in a “U-S-A!” chant following Bridgeman’s victory, the Americans celebrated their 11th consecutive Presidents Cup win, improving their record to 14-1-1.
Looking Ahead
While the victory was sweet, it also highlighted the need for Team USA to avoid falling into early deficits in future competitions. With the next Ryder Cup set for 2027 in Ireland, the team must refine their play, particularly in the foursomes format.
As they head to Ireland, the Americans can draw confidence from their strong singles performance, but they must ensure they do not repeat the mistakes of the past.
